Dealing with Mask Acne: Tips for Minimizing the Issue
If you’re wearing a mask regularly, or even less often, but for extended periods, these tips can help protect your skin and minimize the issues. Don’t forget to let you skin breathe as often as you are able!
1. 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙮𝙥𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙧: 100% cotton will allow your skin to breathe a bit more, as will silk. If you use a non-disposable mask, you must treat it like it’s underwear and wash/change it Every. Single. Day.
⠀
If you use disposable masks, you may benefit from changing them out several times per day. If a face shield is an option for you, you may also look into swapping your mask for a shield; brands like ZShield don’t make any contact with your skin and are especially good for acne prone complexions.
⠀
2. 𝙒𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙪𝙥: Masks intensify what we have on our skin; the more makeup you put on your skin means you have even more compounds clogging pores and irritating skin. If you must wear makeup, consider using only a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen.
⠀
3. 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧-𝙩𝙝𝙚-𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙘𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨: Harsh treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid may compound the issue by over-drying skin and leaving you more prone to irritation. Hydrocortisone, although it may seem to work in the short-term, leads to long-term thinning of the skin and makes you more prone to a litany of problems down the road.
⠀
PS - if what’s on your face looks like more of a rash, blisters, or feels itchy it may not be acne at all! You likely have contact dermatitis - a condition which is inflamed by all traditional acne treatments.
