The Best Non-Toxic Nail Polish Removers
On a scale of 1-to-lizard skin, how dry and cracked are your hands and cuticles this time of year? This dryness is especially exacerbated if you use acetone-based nail polish remover as it strips away your skin’s natural oil barrier leaving you with ragged, cracked, and dry cuticles. PLUS ingredients in traditional nail polish remover - such as acetone, ethyl acetate, and butyl acetate - can cause headaches, dizziness, irritates eyes, skin, and are considered UNSAFE during pregnancy!
But help is on the way! There are several all-natural nail polish removers that don’t contain a drop of acetone and are actually GOOD for your skin! Keep reading to see my top natural nail polish removers, plus a DIY nail polish remover recipe!
1. Karma Organic Nail Polish Remover
This lovely product is soybean-oil based and free from alcohol and acetone. It easily removes even the toughest nail polish (even my go-to dark red shade) plus it smells like lavender! Because it contains aloe vera, it actually moisturizes your cuticles while taking off your nail polish, so your nails end up looking pretty fantastic when your nail polish is gone. It’s non-toxic, vegan, cruelty free, and petroleum-free. Keep in mind that because it is oil-based, you will need to let it sit on your nails for a minute or so before rubbing with a cotton ball. What you give up in speed, however, you definitely gain in terms of healthy, moisturized nails. This stuff has been my holy grail nail polish remover since I discovered it earlier this year.
2. Ella+Mila Soy Nail Polish Remover
Vitamin-enriched with A, C, and E, this soy-based nail polish remover is free from harsh acetates (including acetone). This remover also smells lovely thanks to lavender oil. It won’t dry out your fingernail beds or sting otherwise sensitive cuticles. It is a wonderfully effective nail polish remover in a super cute pink bottle - just remember to follow the removal instructions carefully for best results!
3. Priti NYC Soy Nail Polish Remover
Priti’s Soy Nail Polish Remover is 100% natural, non toxic, and biodegradable. This Earth-friendly product is soy based, highly nourishing, includes essential oils for their therapeutic properties. It is non-hazardous and non-flammable and is also unscented, making a great choice for anyone sensitive to fragrances.
4. DIY Nail Polish Remover
Feel like making your own natural nail polish remover? Here is a quick recipe:
Ingredients:
-1/2 cup white vinegar
- juice of one lemon
Directions:
Pour the vinegar and lemon juice into a small bowl and mix together. Use a cotton ball to apply to your fingernails. Keep in mind this remover will take longer than acetone based remover and it will require more effort - you may need to soak your nails in the bowl for several minutes before rubbing with a cotton in order to fully soften the polish.
